Last Season
Thirteen goals and 25 points in 42 games, plus-nine, on fourteen and a half minutes a night. Prorated across a full season that is a twenty-five-goal pace, and it is the fourth straight year he has not played a full season.
The Finesse Game
The speed is real and it is the thing that keeps getting him chances. He is genuinely quick through the neutral zone, dangerous on the rush, and he can finish when he arrives with the puck.
The trouble is what happens when the play slows down. He is not a cycle player, does not win pucks below the goal line, and his offence largely disappears against structured teams that take away the rush.
Sixty-one shots in forty-two games is a decent rate and suggests the finishing is not the problem.
The Physical Game
Five-eleven and 200, and he does not play to that weight. He avoids the interior, is moved off pucks on the wall, and does not forecheck with any bite.
The injuries have been varied rather than chronic, which is either bad luck or something more.
The Intangibles
A sixteenth pick acquired for a first-round pick, which set an expectation he has never met. He has been a useful middle-six forward for two organisations and nothing more.
At twenty-five, on a team with several young forwards passing him, this is the season where he either takes a top-six spot or becomes a very fast third-liner permanently.
