The Finesse Game

The release is the whole trade and it is one of the three or four quickest in the league. He does not need space or time; he needs a lane for about a fifth of a second, and he finds one most nights.

Four hundred and thirty-seven unblocked attempts, 39 goals, median distance 29 feet with 31 per cent from inside twenty. That is further out than most forty-goal scorers work from, and it does not matter, because the shot beats goaltenders clean rather than through traffic.

Forty-four assists says the passing is genuinely good and slightly hidden by the goal total.

The Physical Game

Five foot eight and 180 pounds, which makes him one of the two or three smallest forwards in the league, and he has scored 294 goals in 696 games anyway. Nineteen penalty minutes.

He does not go to the net front, he does not win a wall battle, and he has built an entire career on being somewhere the puck is about to be rather than somewhere a defenceman can reach.

The Intangibles

Fifty-one point four per cent of the expected goals, 66th percentile — a good number on a club that was 48.2 per cent as a team.

Nine points in his last ten, six of them goals. He is 28 and has now scored forty in a season three times for three different clubs, which settles the argument about whether the first one was the roster.

Detroit finished third in the league on the power play. Fifteen of these goals came there, and he is the reason it works.
