Last Season

Twenty-four goals and 35 assists in 69 games — 59 points, plus-one, at 18:11 a night with eight power-play goals. A hundred and four points in 143 career games.

He turned 21 in March.

The Finesse Game

The hands are the draw and they are extraordinary — he manipulates defenders in tight and makes passes through seams that most players do not see, which is what a fourth overall pick out of the US programme is supposed to look like.

Two hundred and forty unblocked attempts, 24 goals, median 29 feet with only 30 per cent from inside twenty. Like Celebrini he is scoring from range, and like Celebrini that is a release rather than a location.

Thirty-five assists in 69 games is the real number.

The Physical Game

Six foot even and 180 pounds, and this is the whole reservation. Sixteen penalty minutes.

He does not go to the interior, does not win a wall battle, and is moved off pucks by grown defencemen. Two summers of weight is the standard answer and he has had one.

The Intangibles

Forty-eight point four per cent of the expected goals, 39th percentile, and 47.4 per cent of the shot attempts, 29th, across 995 minutes, with the goals 38-43 against.

Those are respectable figures for a twenty-one-year-old on a club that was outshot all year.

Twelve points in his last ten. He is 21, and the pairing with Celebrini gives San Jose two centres born within fifteen months of each other who have already produced a hundred and seventy-four points between them in a single season.
