53.4 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 81st percentile. His ice went 43-41 against an expectation of 52.16-45.46 — nine goals of scoring missing and four fewer conceded.
The Finesse Game
The skating is the best of any centre in the league and it is not an argument — he crosses the blue line at a speed that forces a defenceman to give ground, and he does it without straightening up.
233 attempts at a median of 30 feet with 33 per cent from inside 20, converting at 12.0 per cent. 66 assists is the number: he carries the puck into the zone and gives it up a beat after the defence has committed to him, which is the hardest pass in hockey to defend.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 208 and he is not a physical player, and he does not need to be. He protects the puck with his speed rather than his body.
8 penalty minutes in 77 games at twenty and a half minutes a night is close to the lowest total of any first-line centre in this edition. He does not foul, he does not retaliate, and on the club that spent the least time shorthanded in the league that is not a coincidence.
The Intangibles
Second overall in 2015 and 616 games and 608 points, six seasons of it in Buffalo on hockey teams that lost constantly.
He had an artificial disc replacement in his neck in 2021 that no NHL player had undergone before, forced a trade to get it, and has produced 94 points at 28. He was the best player at the Four Nations for the United States. He is 29.
