This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
70 games, no goals and 14 assists, 18 penalty minutes, 18:40 a night and minus-7. He took 49.3 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,183 minutes, the 47th percentile, and his ice went 45-49 against an expectation of 44.07-45.34.
A goal of finishing above what the chances were worth and four more conceded than they called for. No goals in 70 games at eighteen and a half minutes a night is a defenceman doing exactly the job he is given and nothing else.
The Finesse Game
92 attempts at a median of 49 feet with 67 per cent of them from beyond forty and 5 per cent from inside twenty, 71 of those on goal, converted at nothing at all against a career 3.33 across 720 shots.
Twenty-four career goals and no power-play goals at all in 601 games. Seventy-one of his 92 attempts reached the goaltender and none of them went in; a career 3.33 per cent across seven hundred and twenty shots is an extraordinarily low rate over that many, and it has never mattered to anybody who has played him.
The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 210 and took 18 penalty minutes.
177 career penalty minutes in 601 games. He defends by position rather than by contact and does it without ever taking a penalty; ten seasons of eighteen-minute assignments for a hundred and seventy-seven penalty minutes is remarkable discipline.
The Intangibles
Undrafted, ten seasons, and Washington is his third organisation.
A career plus-9 in 601 games from a man nobody drafted. He came out of college at 23, has played 601 NHL games since, and has taken eighteen minutes a night doing it.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 25 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 652 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 74 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.
Usual linemates
2023-24 · 1183 minutes at five-on-five
Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2023-24
- The club
- WSH took 47.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 49.3% — 2.1 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third pair, 1,183 minutes at five-on-five — 81st percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasmus Sandin | 50.7% | 48.6% | 45.0% |
| Dylan Strome | 58.4% | 45.4% | 52.7% |
| Connor McMichael | 52.5% | 48.2% | 45.2% |
50.7% together, 48.6% for him apart and 45.0% for Sandin apart. Sandin was worse away from him while his own share held — the pairing was doing more for Sandin than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
