The Finesse Game
The passing is the case for him and it is a real one. Thirty assists from a defenceman is a top-twenty figure at the position, and he moves the puck out of danger quickly and accurately.
The shot is heavy from the point — 204 unblocked attempts from a median of 51 feet — and only five went in, which is a poor return for that volume.
The Physical Game
Six foot even and 190, and it is the weakness. Forty-three penalty minutes, most of them the wrong kind. He cannot clear his crease and gets beaten in front by heavier forwards.
The Intangibles
Forty-eight point six per cent of the expected goals, 41st percentile, against 52.4 per cent of the shot attempts, 78th — a wide split, and it says the puck was in the right end while he was out there and the chances he conceded were the dangerous kind.
New York finished dead last in the league on the penalty kill and 28th in even-strength expected goals against. He is not solely responsible and he is part of it.
He is 30, on his sixth organisation, with a long record of clubs deciding the offence is not worth the rest. Four points in his last ten, none of them goals.
