The Finesse Game

The shot chart is the most extreme in this book. Sixty-eight per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, with a median distance of twelve. Nobody covered here shoots from closer — not Bertuzzi at thirteen, not Benson, not Zucker.

Seventeen goals from 110 shots on goal is what happens when a six-foot-five man decides to live in the crease. He tips, he screens, he collects rebounds, and he is strong enough that clearing him is a two-man job.

There is no perimeter game and no need for one. Fifteen assists in 63 games.

The Physical Game

Six foot five and 234 pounds, and the entire value proposition. Fifty-nine penalty minutes, most of them earned in the two square metres in front of the opposing goaltender.

The skating is the limit. He is slow, he cannot forecheck at pace, and it is why a player scoring at this rate gets under fourteen minutes a night.

The Intangibles

Fifty-four point one per cent of the expected goals, 83rd percentile, in 736 minutes.

He is 25, a fourth-round pick, and 58 goals into 211 career games — a twenty-goal pace from a bottom-six role.

He is also, on the evidence of the shot chart, the single most playoff-shaped forward in this edition. A tight series takes away open ice; it does not take away the front of the net, and this is a man who does all his scoring there.
