44.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,013 minutes, the 19th percentile. His ice went 30-41 against an expectation of 36.62-44.92 — seven goals of scoring missing and four fewer conceded than the chances predicted.
The Finesse Game
131 attempts at a median of 25 feet, with 41 per cent from inside 20 and 22 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 8.4 per cent. The finishing has always been the weaker half.
Thirty assists is the job. He holds the puck below the goal line and waits rather than forcing the seam, and 283 assists against 156 goals in 782 games is the shape of the whole career. He had 59 points beside Artemi Panarin in New York and 41 here, which is the honest measure of what he is: a good second-line centre whose output is decided by the winger.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 192 and light for a centre taking these draws. He competes on the wall without winning many of them against size.
86 penalty minutes in 79 games and 541 in 782 for his career is a high rate for a player with no physical edge to speak of, and most of it is the stick foul that follows losing a step. On a club spending 6:08 a game shorthanded, that is the part that costs.
The Intangibles
Fifth overall in 2011 by the Islanders, and 782 games and 439 points across four clubs. He has never been the player a fifth-overall pick is supposed to be and he has had a long, useful NHL career anyway.
