This Season So Far
The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
24 goals and 21 assists in 77 games — 45 points at 17:45 a night, minus-3, with 6 power-play goals on 151 shots, converting at 15.89 per cent, and 35 penalty minutes.
A career high in goals for the second season running. 48.5 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,041 minutes, the 39th percentile; his ice went 49-46 against an expectation of 40.6-43.09, so he outscored the chances by eight.
The Finesse Game
151 attempts at a median of 26 feet, 34 per cent from inside 20 and 18 per cent from beyond 40, off a 90.2 mph shot at the 45th percentile.
Eighty career goals in 423 games, and 44 of them in the last two seasons. The hands arrived late, which happens with big forwards and is why clubs keep drafting them. The passing has not arrived and probably will not — 75 career assists, and the play does not run through him.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 214, and this was always the point — 288 penalty minutes in 423 games, a heavy forechecker who finishes his check, and a man other clubs’ defencemen count before they go back for a puck.
He wins the wall and he is not moved off the front of the net. The skating is fine for the size at 22.4 mph, the 57th percentile, which is enough to arrive on time.
The Intangibles
Eleventh overall in 2015 to Florida, traded here at nineteen as the sweetener in a contract dump, which is a strange way to acquire an eleventh-overall pick, and seven years later he is a 24-goal power winger.
He is 26. He is one of only two players on this roster who has both size and finishing, and on a club whose whole problem is that it can be pushed around, that makes him more important than 45 points suggests.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.
- a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed
- he lacks itraised, and he does not have it
Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 47 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 58 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 67 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2022-23
- The club
- ARI took 45.5% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 48.5% — 3.0 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third line, 1,041 minutes at five-on-five — 63rd percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matias Maccelli | 52.4% | 43.2% | 40.7% |
| Nick Bjugstad | 51.5% | 45.5% | 46.3% |
| J.J. Moser | 45.5% | 50.7% | 44.9% |
52.4% together, 43.2% for him apart and 40.7% for Maccelli apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
