The Finesse Game
Modest and reasonably placed. A hundred and eight unblocked attempts, four goals, median 25 feet with 42 per cent from inside twenty.
Four goals from a hundred and eight tries is a poor conversion off decent ice, and a hundred and five points in 387 career games is the rate of a fourth-line forward who has never quite scored enough to be anything else.
Nine assists in 73 games says the same thing from the other direction.
The Physical Game
Six foot one, 191, and light. Sixteen penalty minutes in a full season is very low.
The skating is genuinely good — he is quick through the neutral zone and it is the reason he keeps getting work — but he does not win pucks on a wall and does not go to the interior often enough to use the speed.
The Intangibles
Forty-nine point one per cent of the expected goals, 45th percentile, and 48.2 per cent of the shot attempts, 37th, across 782 minutes in Florida.
He is 27, a thirty-sixth overall pick who New Jersey drafted, gave a first crack at, let go, and has now brought back after three seasons in a winning organisation.
That is a fourth-line centre who has watched a Stanley Cup team work from the inside, which is worth something on a roster that has not found out what that looks like.
