Last Season

Five goals and 10 assists in 75 games, plus-three, at 18:03 a night. His five-on-five minutes were played in New York.

The Finesse Game

Minimal by design. Ninety-six unblocked attempts from a median distance of 53 feet, five goals, and only six per cent of his shots came from inside twenty. He is a point shooter who is not really a shooter.

Ten assists in 75 games from a top-four defenceman is a low number and reflects a player who moves it to the nearest option rather than the best one.

The Physical Game

Six foot three, 199, and he defends honestly — boxes out, blocks shots, 41 penalty minutes. He is not a punisher but he is not easy to get past either.

The Intangibles

The numbers are hard on him and they were hard on him in a good team’s line-up, which removes the usual excuse. Forty-six per cent of the expected goals, 20th percentile; 45.9 per cent of the shot attempts, 16th percentile. The expected goals went 42.4 to 49.3 against across 1,176 minutes, which is a full season’s worth of evidence.

He is 29 with 373 games behind him and a reputation as a steady defensive defenceman. The arithmetic has never agreed with that reputation and last season it disagreed loudly.
