Last Season

Twenty goals and 20 assists in 52 games — 40 points, minus-seven, at 16:26 a night with seven power-play goals. Thirty games missed.

The Finesse Game

A shooter who has quietly put together a good career. A hundred and seventy-two unblocked attempts, eighteen goals, median 33 feet with only 25 per cent from inside twenty and 26 per cent from beyond forty.

That is a long way out for a twenty-goal pace, and it works because the release is quick and deceptive. It is also the least dependable way to make a living.

Four hundred and thirty-eight points in 720 career games.

The Physical Game

Six foot one, 191, and he does not seek contact. Eleven penalty minutes in 52 games is one of the lowest rates in this edition.

He gets to his shooting ice by timing and by finding the soft spot, not by winning it.

The Intangibles

Fifty-two point seven per cent of the expected goals, 76th percentile — the best mark on the club by a clear margin — and 49.3 per cent of the shot attempts, 48th, across 662 minutes, with the chances 29.2 to 26.2 in his favour.

On a roster where the five busiest skaters sit between the eleventh and thirty-eighth percentiles, that is a striking outlier, and thirty games missed is the reason it is not talked about.

Five points in his last ten, three of them goals. He is 30, and the honest read is that Seattle is a better team when he plays and has not had him for a full season in three years.
