This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
82 games, 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points, 6 on the power play, 70 penalty minutes, 18:35 a night and plus-5, with 2 game-winners. He took 53.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,179 minutes, the 77th percentile, and his ice went 57-48 against an expectation of 56.59-49.74.
Level with the chances at both ends, which is the least dramatic season he has had. Eighty-two games is the second time in three years he has played every one of them.
The Finesse Game
273 attempts at a median of 28 feet with 35 per cent of them from inside twenty, 193 of those on goal, converted at 13.6 per cent against a career 13.51 across 3,685 shots.
498 career goals and 798 assists. The hands in traffic are what have survived; he still takes a puck into two men and comes out the other side with it, and the release off the wrong foot is unchanged. 179 career power-play goals is the third-highest total in this edition.
The Physical Game
He is 6-5 and 213 and took 70 penalty minutes.
1,160 career penalty minutes in 1,145 games — the third-most in this edition, behind Tom Wilson and Corey Perry. He plays angry when the game turns, retaliates rather than absorbs, and a good deal of that total is the second penalty rather than the first.
The Intangibles
Second overall in 2004, eighteen seasons, all of them in Pittsburgh, and 1,296 points in 1,145 games — third in this edition.
He is 38 and two goals short of five hundred. Whatever the club decides to become, it will happen with him and Crosby still in the room, because neither of them has ever played anywhere else.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 21 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 652 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 84 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.
Usual linemates
2023-24 · 1179 minutes at five-on-five
Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2023-24
- The club
- PIT took 51.1% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 53.2% — 2.1 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- First line, 1,179 minutes at five-on-five — 81st percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reilly Smith | 54.2% | 52.3% | 49.9% |
| Erik Karlsson | 55.3% | 51.3% | 53.3% |
| Rickard Rakell | 54.5% | 52.4% | 53.4% |
54.2% together, 52.3% for him apart and 49.9% for Smith apart. Smith was worse away from him while his own share held — the pairing was doing more for Smith than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
