This Season So Far

The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

80 games, 12 goals and 27 assists for 39 points, 3 on the power play, 34 penalty minutes, 15:10 a night and plus-26. He took 56.1 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,040 minutes, the 92nd percentile, and his ice went 46-23 against an expectation of 45.07-35.25.

Twelve goals fewer conceded than the chances called for, which is the largest such gap among the club’s forwards and belongs to Sergei Bobrovsky rather than to him. The plus-26 should be read with that in mind.

The Finesse Game

186 shots at a median of 31 feet with 30 per cent from inside 20, converted at 6.5 per cent against a career 7.6.

126 career assists in 465 games. He is a quick, honest skater who moves the puck early and gets to the right place without the puck, which is why he has spent nine seasons being useful on a series of rosters without ever being important on one.

The Physical Game

He is 5-11 and 182 and avoids contact.

34 penalty minutes in 80 games is an ordinary rate. He does not punish anybody and he is moved off the puck easily, and the compensation is that he is rarely standing still long enough to be hit.

The Intangibles

Undrafted, out of Toronto, four years at Boston University, and 465 games since. 207 points and a career plus-3 across nine seasons.

He is 31 and this was comfortably the best season of his career on comfortably the best club he has played for. Both of those facts are worth remembering when reading the plus-26.

The eye and the numbers

The numbers rank him 44 points above where the report does. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.

Both bars are percentiles among the 379 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 65 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Usual linemates

2023-24 · 1040 minutes at five-on-five

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.

Why the numbers land there

The club
FLA took 53.7% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 56.1% — 2.4 above the club he did it on.

Gustav Forsling56.8%55.6%55.9%

59.4% together, 53.1% for him apart and 62.2% for Barkov apart. He was worse away from Barkov, who was no better away from him — he needed that pairing more than Barkov did.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.

Where he shoots from
