The Finesse Game
Almost none. A hundred and thirty-one unblocked attempts from a median of 56 feet, three per cent of them inside twenty, and two goals. Nine goals in 260 career games.
The first pass is functional. He is not going to add anything at the offensive blue line and the club does not ask.
The Physical Game
Six foot six, 217, with reach that ends plays and enough mobility to stay with most forwards. Seventeen penalty minutes in 81 games of the hardest assignment available is unusually disciplined for a man his size.
The Intangibles
The numbers are among the worst in this edition: 41.3 per cent of the expected goals — third percentile — with the expected goals running 49.3 to 70.1 against across 1,440 minutes, and the actual goals 54-70.
The context is a club that was last in the league in expected goals for and 31st against, and Vlasic drew every top line on the schedule. Somebody had to, and there is nobody here to share it with.
He is 25 and 260 games in. The honest position is that this season tells us very little about him and quite a lot about Chicago, and that a defenceman cannot post a third-percentile rate for a second straight year without it starting to be about him.
