Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

6 goals and 6 assists in 49 games — 12 points — at 12:13 a night. Plus-9, 44 shots at 13.6 per cent, 30 penalty minutes.

44.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 16th percentile, with his ice at 18-12 against an expectation of 16.6-20.95 — nine goals better than the chances at the defensive end across 509 minutes.

He started 28.1 per cent of his shifts in the attacking zone: 87 attacking draws against 223, the 2nd percentile of this book. Of the seven most defensively deployed skaters in the league, four are Islanders, and he is the most extreme of them.

Sixteen seasons, 982 games, 274 points, 666 penalty minutes.

The Finesse Game

44 shots at a median of 25 feet, and six goals.

Inside twenty: 15 shots on goal and 2 goals. Twenty to forty: 18 and 3. Beyond forty: 10 and 1. The whole season is forty-three shots on goal and there is no band worth separating out.

30 wrist shots and 13 snap out of 65 tracked attempts. 87.6 mph at the 27th percentile.

136 goals in 982 games at 13.6 per cent last season, on a rate that has been between eight and thirteen for a decade and a half. He is where he is because of what happens before the shot.

The Physical Game

5-11 and 215, with 30 penalty minutes in forty-nine games and 666 in his career.

Top speed 21.6 mph, the 18th percentile; 0.4 bursts a game, the 18th; 1.94 miles a game, the 14th.

Bottom fifth of the league in all three at thirty-five, which is what sixteen seasons of this game costs.

He forechecks by running into people and finishes every check that is available and several that are not. At 5-11 and 215 he is built low and arrives heavy, and the reason he has 982 games is that nobody has found a way to make it not hurt.

What has gone is the recovery. He is beaten to loose pucks now that he used to reach, and the 16th-percentile chance share is partly that.

The Intangibles

Seventy-second overall in 2006, six seasons in Minnesota and ten here, and 982 games at thirty-five.

The last five seasons read 73 games, 37, 50, 59 and 49. The body is running out.

What the club is keeping is the third of a line it has kept together for a decade, on the argument that the three of them together are worth more than the sum of what this book can measure about them. The measurements do not support it. Nothing in the measurements can rule it out either.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

  • measuredcomputed here from the season's own data
  • a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed
  • he lacks itraised, and he does not have it

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

  • hard-minutes· is started in his own end, against the other club's best

28% of his end-zone starts in the attacking end, 4th percentile among forwards

Season to season, this measure repeats well (0.66) · 50% keep it

  • punishinga strength· finishes checks; hurts people legally

“He forechecks by running into people and finishes every check that is available and several that are not.”

  • hard-to-movea strength· cannot be shifted from where he decides to stand

“At 5-11 and 215 he is built low and arrives heavy, and the reason he has 982 games is that nobody has found a way to make it not hurt.”

  • edgeshe lacks it· changes direction at speed; the forechecker commits and he is gone

“He is beaten to loose pucks now that he used to reach, and the 16th-percentile chance share is partly that.”

The eye and the numbers

The two rank him within 18 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 638 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 62 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

40.1% together, 55.1% for him apart and 46.5% for Martin apart. Both were better apart than together — the pairing was doing neither of them any favours.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
