The Finesse Game

The shot location is still right: 185 unblocked attempts with 43 per cent from inside twenty feet, median 23, and 18 goals.

Two hundred and ninety-six goals in 1,102 games is a genuine career, most of it as a second-line centre who could be trusted with anything. Twenty-one assists is well under his usual rate.

The Physical Game

Six foot one, 200, and he plays a heavy, agitating game that has not softened at 35. Sixty-eight penalty minutes, a willingness to fight, and the sort of forecheck that makes a defenceman rush a pass.

The Intangibles

The minus-28 is one of the worst figures in this book and the underlying numbers do not support it: 49.8 per cent of the expected goals, 51st percentile, with the chances essentially level at 44.2 and 44.5.

That is a full ten-goal gap between what the chances predicted and what happened, on a St Louis club that had its own problems.

Seven points in his last ten, four of them goals. He is 35 and joins an Islanders roster that finished last in the league on the penalty kill, which is a unit he has killed on for a decade.
