The Finesse Game

One of the fastest forwards in the league and the entire game is built on it — he beats defencemen wide and generates zone entries almost at will.

The shot chart is the problem. Two hundred and fifty-three unblocked attempts from a median of 33 feet with only 25 per cent from inside twenty, and nineteen goals. He is a speed forward who does not use the speed to get inside.

Twenty-eight assists is a fair rate.

The Physical Game

Six foot one and 189 pounds, and among the least physically engaged forwards in the league. Eight penalty minutes across 72 games.

There is no forechecking, no wall work, and no net-front game whatsoever.

The Intangibles

Fifty-eight point eight per cent of the expected goals — the 98th percentile, the highest figure of anybody in Washington’s section — and 54.8 per cent of the shot attempts, 90th, across 946 minutes in St. Louis, with the chances 44.1 to 30.9 in his favour.

That is an outstanding number and it sits under forty-six points and a minus-five, which is the sort of contradiction this book exists for.

He is 28, and Washington is buying a 98th percentile and hoping the finishing follows it.
