42 goals and 40 assists in 77 games — 82 points at 19:29 a night, plus-17, with 16 power-play goals and 7 game-winners on 189 shots, and only 7 penalty minutes.
49.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 51st percentile. His ice went 45-41 against an expectation of 48.78-49.12 — four goals of scoring missing and eight fewer conceded, on a line that broke even in the play.
The Finesse Game
189 attempts at a median of 18 feet with 57 per cent from inside 20 and only 7 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 22.2 per cent. That is the highest conversion rate of any player in this edition who took more than a hundred shots, and it is the fourth straight season he has been above 17 per cent.
The shot location explains most of it. He does not shoot from range and he never has; the release is quick, the hands in the slot are excellent, and he gets to the paint by reading a coverage rather than by beating anybody physically.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 177 and light. He does not forecheck with force and he does not win pucks on the wall.
7 penalty minutes in 77 games is close to the lowest total of any regular in this edition. He does not foul, he does not retaliate, and he is on the first penalty-killing unit anyway.
The Intangibles
A third-round pick in 2014 — 79th overall, at 5-9 and 160 pounds — and 657 games, 635 points, 306 goals and two Stanley Cups.
He is 29 and has scored 40 or more goals in three of the last four seasons. He scored 14 goals in the 2020 playoffs.
