He wins pucks by being early and gets to the interior on quickness. It has cost him games most seasons and the nineteen missed here are part of a pattern.

The Intangibles

Fifty-two point two per cent of the expected goals, 72nd percentile, and 51.7 per cent of the shot attempts, 73rd, across 867 minutes, with the goals 43-46 against.

On a club where four forwards cleared the eighty-eighth percentile, those are the weakest figures among Tampa’s top six — which says more about the company than about him.

Five points in his last ten. He is 30, two Stanley Cups, and the third-best forward on his own team, which is a strange thing to write about a three-hundred-goal centre.
