Last Season
Thirty-one goals and 39 assists in 79 games — 70 points, plus-one, at 16:59 a night, with 12 power-play goals. Eleven points in his last ten games, six of them goals.
The Finesse Game
Big, strong, and skilled in a combination that is rarer than it sounds. He protects pucks below the goal line with his back to a defenceman and then finds a man, and the hands in tight are genuinely good for a player his size.
The shooting is well judged: 322 unblocked attempts, 35 per cent from inside twenty feet, median 28, and 34 goals. He is a volume shooter who is also getting to the middle, which is the combination that produces thirty.
The Physical Game
Six foot three, 200, and he uses it. Sixty-six penalty minutes, a willingness to finish checks and to be unpleasant in front of the net. On a club whose top six is otherwise small, he is the one who makes room.
The Intangibles
Fifty-five point nine per cent of the expected goals, 91st percentile, and 61.3 per cent of the shot attempts, 99th.
He was the second pick in 2018 and there were three or four seasons where the production sat below what that implied. A hundred and eighty-two goals in 557 games is now a perfectly respectable career, and last season was the best of it.
He is 26 and the only player in Carolina’s top six who can play the heavy game. If this club is going to survive a tight series, a good deal of it runs through whether he can drag the small forwards through it.
