The Finesse Game
A skating defenceman who is at his best carrying the puck out of his own end. The first pass is good and the feet are better; he beats a forechecker by going through the space rather than around it.
The shot does not contribute: 171 unblocked attempts from a median of 49 feet, seven per cent inside twenty, six goals. Thirty assists is where the offence lives.
The Physical Game
Six foot three, 214, and he defends without imposing. Twenty-six penalty minutes. He can be worked out of the way in front of his own net by a heavy winger, which on a team built to defend the middle is the wrong weakness to have.
The Intangibles
The one Dallas defenceman whose numbers do not fit the club’s pattern. He was on for 48.6 per cent of the expected goals, 41st percentile, and 47.7 per cent of the shot attempts, 33rd — with the expected goals running 54.0 to 57.1 against across 1,372 minutes.
Every other regular defenceman here posted an expected-goal share above fifty. Lindell and Heiskanen were at 53. Harley was the only one under water, in the second-most minutes.
