The Finesse Game
The skating is the calling card and it is genuinely good: he is among the quicker forwards on the club and he uses it to forecheck rather than to carry.
The shooting deserves the same warning attached to half this roster. Forty-five per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 21, which is honest work — but fifteen goals on 78 shots is a rate no bottom-six forward sustains. Expect eight or nine next time from the same process.
The Physical Game
Five foot eleven and 184 pounds in a line-up full of large men, and it shows. He is not winning pucks by force and sixteen penalty minutes says he does not try. He compensates by getting there first.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick out of Russia who has become a useful NHL fourth-line centre by 24, which is a fair outcome.
The results underneath were poor — 47.3 per cent of the expected goals, 29th percentile, with the expected goals running 37.3 to 41.6 against while the actual goals went 47-35 for. That is a twelve-goal gift and it belongs to the goaltender.
Six points in his last ten. The speed is real and will keep him employed; the scoring rate is borrowed and will be handed back.
