The Finesse Game
The skating is the foundation and it is still excellent: he escapes pressure by turning through it and he joins the rush as a genuine fourth attacker. 50 assists from a defenceman is a top-pair number and most of them are earned at even strength rather than gifted on the power play.
The shot is a tool for creating rather than scoring. 57 per cent of his attempts came from beyond 40 feet, median 44, and 11 went in.
The Physical Game
6-1, 211, and he plays a genuinely hard game — 62 penalty minutes, angry on the forecheck, willing in front of his own net. He is one of the few defencemen in the league who is both a puck-mover and unpleasant to play against.
The durability is the concern. 69 games is his fourth season in 5 under 70.
The Intangibles
The eye says top-pair defenceman and the numbers say something more ordinary: 48.6 per cent of the expected goals, 42nd percentile. The goals went 66-51 his way anyway — 18 better than the chances predicted, which is Boston’s goaltending and not his defending.
