The Finesse Game

Skilled and light. Eighty-nine unblocked attempts, eight goals, median 27 feet with 27 per cent from inside twenty — a perimeter shot chart, and the reason the goals are modest.

Fourteen assists in fourteen minutes a night is the better half. Eighty points in 205 career games.

He is a genuinely creative passer on a power play and that is where three of his goals and a good share of the assists came from.

The Physical Game

Five foot eleven, 195, and he does not go to the net. Twelve penalty minutes in 51 games is among the lowest rates in this edition and it is not a compliment here.

There is no forechecking game and no wall play, which is why five seasons in he is still a thirteenth forward as often as not.

The Intangibles

Forty-nine point seven per cent of the expected goals, 50th percentile, and 52.2 per cent of the shot attempts, 77th, across 637 minutes, with the goals level at 20-20.

That is a rare shape — a good attempt share and a level chance share — and it says the shots he is on the ice for come from the outside at both ends.

Six points in his last ten. He is 26, a thirty-third overall pick who Detroit could not find a role for, and a skilled winger with no physical game on a club that has plenty of them.
