This Season So Far

The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

23 goals and 28 assists in 70 games — 51 points at 16:48 a night, plus-26, with 3 game-winners on 111 shots, converting at 20.7 per cent, and 10 penalty minutes.

52.3 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 74th percentile. His ice went 32-31 against an expectation of 44.56-40.67 — thirteen goals of scoring missing, on a first line that was creating at a very high rate.

The Finesse Game

111 attempts at a median of 21 feet with 48 per cent from inside 20 and only 10 per cent from beyond 40. He shoots from the house and almost nowhere else, and 20.7 per cent is the highest conversion of anybody on the club.

28 assists in 70 games from a first-line winger is honest production. The hands are ordinary; he arrives in the right place because he wins the puck first.

The Physical Game

6-0 and 203 and he forechecks as hard as anybody on this roster. He finishes checks, he wins pucks below the goal line, and he is difficult to move off possession.

10 penalty minutes in 70 games is a remarkable total for a player who plays this way. He does not retaliate and he is essentially never beaten badly enough to have to foul — on the club that spent the least time shorthanded in the league.

The Intangibles

A second-round pick in 2014 and 585 games and 290 points, with a Stanley Cup in St. Louis in 2019 and another here in 2023.

He is 29. He was acquired at the 2023 deadline and scored 18 points in 22 playoff games on the way to the Cup.

The two rank him within 14 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 637 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 80 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Usual linemates

2024-25 · 1040 minutes at five-on-five

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.

Why the numbers land there

Five-on-five, 2024-25

The club

51.3% together, 55.6% for him apart and 57.8% for Eichel apart. Both were better apart than together — the pairing was doing neither of them any favours.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
