The shot chart is the only encouraging thing here: 51 per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 20, and three went in from 68 tries.

Getting to that ice and converting nothing is a finishing problem, which is more forgivable than a positioning one and still ends careers. Seventeen points in 102 games.

The Physical Game

Six foot even, 180, and light for a player whose job is the hard areas. Sixteen penalty minutes in 53 games. He competes and mostly loses.

The Intangibles

Forty point two per cent of the expected goals — second percentile in the league — and 42.7 per cent of the shot attempts, third, across 512 minutes. Those are the worst figures on a team that had the worst figures in hockey.

He is 24, a third-round pick, and 102 games in. The caveat that has attached to every Chicago page applies here too, and it has a floor: at some point a player has to be better than the second percentile, and a fourth-liner who cannot score does not get many more seasons to find out.
