Last Season

One goal and two assists in 66 games — three points, minus-six, at 10:24 a night with 59 penalty minutes. His five-on-five work was done in Philadelphia.

The Finesse Game

Sixty-one unblocked attempts and one goal. A hundred and sixty-three points in 672 career games, which is a quarter of a point per game across eleven seasons.

There is nothing here and nothing pretended.

The Physical Game

Six foot two, 212, and the entire proposition. Fifty-nine penalty minutes, a genuine willingness to fight, and one of the more physically committed forecheckers in the league at 34.

He hits everything, he finishes every check, and he has built a 672-game career out of a skill set that scouts told him was not enough.

The Intangibles

The numbers are better than the scoring: 50.3 per cent of the expected goals, 56th percentile — but only 46 per cent of the shot attempts, 18th. His line gets outshot and gives up little that is dangerous, which is the signature of a checking fourth line doing its job.

The goals went 39-23 in his favour in 612 minutes, which is a good margin.

He is 34, undrafted out of Brown, and Florida has now assembled Hathaway, Gudas, Bennett and both Tkachuks. That is a deliberate roster built for one month of the year, and this is what one of the parts costs.
