30 goals and 69 points in all 82 games — the first complete season of his career — with 13 of the goals on the power play. The minus-12 is the second-worst mark among the club’s regular forwards, behind Namestnikov.
The Finesse Game
The hands are excellent for a 6-3 winger. He works below the goal line, protects the puck with his back to pressure, and has a quick, heavy release from the slot. On the power play he is genuinely dangerous — 13 of his 30 goals came with the man advantage, which is a very high share.
He is a good passer in tight and a poor one at speed, which is a function of the skating rather than the vision.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 216, and he plays a heavy game around the net. He wins wall battles, screens goaltenders, and gets to the dirty areas without needing to be asked.
The skating is the limitation and it is a real one. He does not separate, he is caught from behind, and against a defenceman with a tight gap he cannot go around anyone.
The Intangibles
An 11th overall pick whose first 5 professional seasons were defined by back problems and missed time. A full 82 games is the most encouraging thing on his record.
The minus-12 is the honest criticism — he is not a strong defensive player and the skating makes tracking back difficult. On a line that scores this much it is tolerated, and it is the reason he is not a first-line winger.
