Twelve goals and 32 points in 68 games, minus-nine, on fifteen and a half minutes a night. That is roughly his established rate across three full seasons.

The Finesse Game

The hands and the vision are genuine. He is a patient passer who holds the puck until a lane opens rather than forcing it, and he is excellent on the half-wall on a power play — that is where most of his value sits.

The shot is quick and accurate from the slot. A hundred and thirty-six shots in sixty-eight games is a decent volume; the conversion is what has not arrived.

The skating is the ceiling. He is not slow, but he does not separate, and against NHL defencemen with good gaps he cannot create space by himself. Everything he does well requires a linemate to make room.

The Physical Game

Five-eleven and 185, and he plays a light game. He does not win pucks along the wall, avoids the interior, and is not a factor on the forecheck. The minus-nine is partly that.

The Intangibles

The tenth pick in 2020, and at twenty-four the honest question is whether the top-six season is coming or whether this is the player. Three years at the same rate leans toward the second.

He would be helped enormously by a centre who draws attention. On this roster that spot is taken and the man in it has been there a decade.
