The Finesse Game

One of the two most extreme shot charts in this edition. Three hundred and ten unblocked attempts, 68 per cent of them from inside twenty feet, with a median of eleven — only Zach Hyman works from closer — and just ten per cent from beyond forty.

He shoots from the crease and from nowhere else, and he has scored three hundred goals doing it.

Twenty-three assists in a full season is the honest limit of the playmaking.

The Physical Game

Six foot three and 234 pounds, and it is the whole career — he stands in front of goaltenders, absorbs cross-checks, and does not move. Forty-four penalty minutes.

The skating was never good and at 36 it is poor. He gets to the net front because that is where he starts.

The Intangibles

Fifty-two per cent of the expected goals, 70th percentile, and 51.6 per cent of the shot attempts, 72nd, across 1,080 minutes on Long Island, with the chances 52.6 to 48.6 in his favour.

Those are good figures for a man of 36 who cannot skate.

He is 36, a sixth-round pick, sixteen seasons and a captaincy on Long Island, and joins a Utah club whose top six is built entirely of small, quick forwards who shoot from distance. He is the only man on the roster who will stand in the blue paint.
