Thirteen goals and 32 points in 69 games on 159 shots, even on the plus-minus, seventeen minutes a night. Down from his best years, and he missed a stretch of games.

The Finesse Game

The speed is what got him here from nowhere. He forechecks like his contract depends on it — because for a long time it did — and he is genuinely quick to loose pucks, which turns a lot of ordinary dump-ins into possessions.

The hands are good enough for the chances he creates and not good enough to create them from nothing. He scores around the net and off the rush rather than by beating people, and his shot is accurate rather than heavy.

He kills penalties and is trusted in the last minute of a period, which for an undrafted forward is the whole story of a career.

The Physical Game

Five-eleven and 195, and he plays much larger. He initiates contact on the forecheck, works the walls, and gets to the front of the net despite giving away several inches every time.

The style has cost him. He has had a couple of injury-shortened seasons and this one was another.

The Intangibles

Undrafted out of Denver, waived early in his career, and now nearly 500 games in with a real role on a good team. Nobody in the room has to be told what his standard is.

At thirty-one, the question is how much of the speed is left, because everything he does is downstream of it.
