The Finesse Game

The skating is the best of any defenceman on the club and among the better sets of feet in the league — he escapes forechecks by turning through them and carries the puck out cleanly every time.

A hundred and ninety-four unblocked attempts from a median of 50 feet, 65 per cent from beyond forty, ten goals. That is a good conversion for a point shot.

Twenty-nine assists is a fair rate and rather below his best.

The Physical Game

Six foot two, 197, and he does not defend with his body. Twenty-four penalty minutes.

He loses net-front battles and does not clear a crease. The skating and the reads cover most of it.

The Intangibles

Fifty-four point seven per cent of the expected goals, 86th percentile, and 53.1 per cent of the shot attempts, 82nd, across 1,330 minutes, with the chances 59.0 to 48.8 in his favour.

The goals came out 51 for and 54 against — against him, on chances that were ten goals in his favour. That gap is the goaltending, and in Vegas it was the whole season.

Seven points in his last ten. He is 31, a Stanley Cup, and one of the more underrated puck-moving defencemen of the last decade.
