Last Season

Twelve goals and 17 assists in 81 games — 29 points, minus-14, at 16:45 a night. His first NHL season, at 22.

The Finesse Game

The shot selection is better than most of this roster manages. Forty-nine per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 21, and twelve went in on 156 tries.

That is a rookie who has already worked out where goals come from, which on a club that finished last in expected goals is not a small thing.

Seventeen assists is ordinary. He is a shooter who passes rather than the reverse.

The Physical Game

Six foot one, 195, and he competes without imposing. Fourteen penalty minutes in 81 games. He goes to the net and takes the punishment, which is presumably how so many of those shots came from close in.

The Intangibles

Forty-three point five per cent of the expected goals, eighth percentile, and 43.6 per cent of the shot attempts, fifth — numbers that would be alarming anywhere except here, where the club itself was 45.6 per cent.

He played 81 games at 22 on the league’s worst team, spent much of it on Bedard’s line, and came out with 29 points and a shot chart pointing the right way.

Five points in his last ten, three of them goals. A second-round pick doing more than a second-round pick has to.
