Last Season

One goal and five assists in 40 games — six points, minus-10, at 12:27 a night. His five-on-five work was done in Buffalo.

The Finesse Game

Almost nothing arrived. Forty-nine unblocked attempts, one goal, median distance 32 feet. Fifty-six goals in 475 career games, which was never much and is now less.

There is a passer in there — 109 career assists — and at this ice time and this rate it is not visible.

The Physical Game

Six foot six and 231 pounds, and it is the entire reason he has a career. He is enormous, he protects pucks on the wall, and he is genuinely difficult to move off the net front.

Twenty-nine penalty minutes in 40 games. The skating is the limitation and always has been; he is not fast enough to forecheck at NHL pace, which is why the ice time keeps falling.

The Intangibles

The two numbers disagree in an interesting way. He was on for 48.9 per cent of the expected goals, 44th percentile — respectable — but only 44 per cent of the shot attempts, seventh percentile.

That is a player whose line gets badly outshot and gives up nothing dangerous while doing it, which is roughly what a heavy, slow, defensively responsible fourth line produces.

He is 29 with 419 minutes of evidence and a body that is more useful in a tight series than in a season. On this roster he is the only forward over six foot four.
