Last Season

Fourteen goals and 25 assists in 71 games — 39 points, minus-23, at 14:34 a night. His five-on-five work was done in Toronto.

The Finesse Game

The passing is the case for him and it is genuine — 118 assists in 295 career games is a first-line playmaker’s rate from a fourth-round pick.

The shooting is thin: 138 unblocked attempts, 14 goals, median 26 feet with 39 per cent from inside twenty. Fifty-one goals in 295 games says he is a distributor and nothing else.

The Physical Game

Five foot eleven, 187, and light. Sixteen penalty minutes. He does not go near a wall battle and cannot hold the puck against pressure, which is why he needs linemates who can.

The Intangibles

Exactly 50 per cent of the expected goals, 53rd percentile — dead average — against 46.8 per cent of the shot attempts, 24th, with the goals 32-43 against across 886 minutes.

The minus-23 is one of the worst in this book and the chances underneath were level. That is a bad-luck season rather than a bad player.

He is 25 and joins a club that under-finished by twenty goals and needs someone to set up its shooters. The passing will travel. Whether the rest of the game holds up in a defensive structure this poor is the question.
