The Finesse Game

The most efficient scorer on the club. A hundred and fifty-five unblocked attempts produced 23 goals — a fifteen per cent conversion — from a median of 20 feet with 50 per cent from inside twenty.

That is exactly the opposite of Guenther’s chart: Cooley scores by getting into the slot rather than by beating goaltenders from range, and it is the more durable of the two methods.

Nineteen assists in 54 games is a fair rate and the passing is better than the total suggests.

The Physical Game

Six foot even, 191, and quick rather than strong. Twenty-eight penalty minutes.

He gets to the interior on speed and edges. Twenty-eight games missed is the concern and it is the second season in three.

The Intangibles

Fifty-one point six per cent of the expected goals, 68th percentile, across 750 minutes, with the goals 19 for and 30 against — the worst margin among Utah’s forwards, sitting under chances of 34.1 to 32.1 in his favour.

That gap is finishing and goaltending, not him.

Thirteen points in his last ten, seven of them goals. He is 22, the third pick in 2022, and on a club with Keller, Schmaltz and Guenther he is the one with the shot chart that plays in May.
