The Finesse Game
Better hands than the role implies and not enough of a shot to use them. Ninety-three shots on goal in 82 games, nine goals from a median of 29 feet, and only 30 per cent of his attempts from inside twenty.
The 27 assists are the real return. He supports the puck, he makes the short pass at speed, and he does not cough it up in his own zone.
The Physical Game
Six foot even, 188, and he plays considerably heavier. Seventy-eight penalty minutes is a small man who finishes every check and takes the extra shove, and it is the reason a coach trusts him.
The Intangibles
Seventeenth overall in 2019 and traded as part of a package for a franchise winger, which is a difficult label to carry. He has answered it by becoming exactly what a third line needs.
The results were middling: 49.1 per cent of the expected goals, 45th percentile, with the goals 51-33 for and the expected goals 43.9 to 45.5 against — another eighteen-goal gift from the club’s shooting and goaltending.
He is 25 with 378 games behind him. Six points in his last ten. This is his level and there is nothing wrong with it.
