28-22-5 in 56 games with a .9005, a 2.69 average and 3 shutouts, facing 1,457 shots.
The club’s goaltending at five-on-five came in 2.5 goals better than the chances faced, 17th in the league — a league-average season behind a defence that was 3rd at suppressing chances. A .9005 is an ordinary number and it was enough.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 172 and among the lightest goaltenders in the league, which means the technique has to be precise and the athleticism has to fill the gaps.
He plays a conventional depth and he is square more often than not. The rebound control is ordinary and behind a club that suppresses chances as well as this one does, that costs less than it would anywhere else. The lateral recovery is quick and it is the best physical thing about him. He handles the puck adequately.
The Mental Game
This is the whole file and it is a strange one. He has a career .9066 across eight seasons, which is unremarkable, and he has won a Stanley Cup as a rookie, a Four Nations final and a Game 7 in this building — and lost a double-overtime Game 7 in Winnipeg last spring after his club came back from 3-1 down in the series.
He is combative to the point of being a liability some nights and it is not separable from the rest of it. The record in elimination games is the argument and the save percentage is the counter-argument, and both have been true for six years.
The Intangibles
An 88th-overall pick in 2011 who spent six seasons in the minor leagues and did not get an NHL job until he was 25 — then went 24-5-1 with a .927 and won the Cup.
