The Mental Game

He came from nowhere: a seventh-round pick, a long minor-league apprenticeship, and a father who coached goalies for a living. He did not play fifty NHL games until he was 28.

Twenty wins and twenty losses on a team that was outshot all season is not an indictment.

The Intangibles

Seattle conceded 160 goals at five-on-five against an expected 176.6 — its goaltending came in sixteen and a half goals better than the chances it faced, fifth-best in the league. That is the single reason this club was respectable.

But the split inside the crease is uncomfortable. Grubauer, 34 years old and long since written off in this city, stopped .9088 in his 32 games. Daccord stopped .8959 in his 47.

He is 30, he is the starter, and the finish — .865 across ten appearances — is the worst run of his career at exactly the wrong moment.
