This Season So Far

Last Season

35 games, a .915 save percentage, a 2.61 goals-against average and 4 shutouts. Those are better numbers than the man ahead of him posted in 50, and they were compiled by a goaltender in his first extended look.

The Physical Game

6-3 and technically excellent for his age, which was the scouting report on him at 18 and has not changed. He plays a calm, structured game: square early, hands in front, minimal wasted movement. He does not scramble, and he does not need to, because he is generally in the right place before the shot.

He tracks pucks well through screens — the most valuable thing a young goaltender can be good at, and usually the last thing to arrive.

Rebound control is already better than most goaltenders manage at 30. Pucks go to the corners.

The Mental Game

Unhurried. He was a first-round pick with a great deal of expectation attached, spent 3 seasons in the minors without visible frustration, and arrived looking like none of it had touched him.

The real test has not come yet: he has not been the man for a full season, and he has not been through the stretch where a starter loses 6 in a row and has to be steady anyway.

The Intangibles

The twentieth pick in 2021, developed patiently rather than rushed, and now clearly the better goaltender on his own team. What the club does about that in the next 12 months is the most consequential decision it faces.
