Jake Allen
Montreal Canadiens Goaltender
An .8914 behind the club that conceded the third-most goals in the league, and his fourth straight season of decline.

This Season So Far
The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
15-24-3 in 42 games, .8914, 3.55, one shutout on 1,335 shots.
The .8914 is the worst full season of a ten-year career, and the fourth in a row that has been worse than the one before: .9267, .9070, .9047, .8914.
The club in front of him conceded 307 goals, the third-most in the league, and finished thirtieth in expected goals against per sixty at even strength and twenty-seventh on the penalty kill. Montreal’s goaltending value came out twenty-fourth, which is the model saying the goaltending made a bad situation somewhat worse rather than causing it.
One shutout in forty-two games.
Ten seasons, 395 games.
The Finesse Game
6-2 and 197, and a technical, positional style that was very good in St. Louis and has aged quickly.
He reads plays well and is beaten by pace. Against a clean shot from distance he is fine; against the second chance and the cross-crease pass he is a step late, and a club that concedes what Montreal concedes generates a great many of both.
The .9267 season in St. Louis in 2019-20 came behind a club that had won the Stanley Cup the year before. Nothing about the four seasons since has resembled it, and the difference in the clubs is most of the difference in the numbers.
The Intangibles
Thirty-fourth overall in 2008 to St. Louis, eight seasons there behind and beside Jordan Binnington, and three in Montreal.
He is thirty-three and the club has decided Montembeault is the first choice. What Allen is now is a veteran backup on a rebuilding club, which is a job with a two-year horizon.
This book records the .8914 and records that the man in front of it was on the worst defensive club in the league bar one.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.
- he lacks itraised, and he does not have it
Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.
