The Finesse Game

The release is quick and the hands are good, and the eighth pick in 2020 was taken for exactly that. What has not arrived is the willingness to use them from the right ice: only 26 per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, with a median of 30.

He shoots plenty and mostly from the outside, which produces twenty goals rather than the thirty the ability suggests. Zucker and Doan play on the same roster and take their shots from fourteen and seventeen feet. The difference is not talent.

Thirty-one assists says the playmaking is genuine and possibly the better half of him.

The Physical Game

Six foot one and 185 pounds, and it is the thin part. Eighteen penalty minutes in 82 games. He is not going to win a puck on the wall against a defenceman and he does not put himself in the traffic where the shorter shots live.

The Intangibles

The on-ice results were respectable — 50.5 per cent of the expected goals, 58th percentile, with the goals 51-43 in his favour — on a club that finished 12th and 16th in expected goals for and against.

He is 24 and has played 260 games. Seven points in his last ten, five of them goals. There is a thirty-goal scorer in here and it is going to require standing somewhere less comfortable.
