The skating is fine for the role. He is not going to be beaten wide by an average NHL winger.
The Physical Game
Six foot three, 205, and this is the part he can sell. He boxes out, he clears the front of the net, and 24 penalty minutes suggests he is doing it without crossing the line much.
The Intangibles
The minus-14 will define how people talk about his rookie season, and it should not. While he was on the ice at five-on-five the goals went 30-51 against — but the expected goals went 36.7 to 35.7, essentially even. That gap of sixteen goals is not a defenceman being caved in; it is a team shooting badly in front of him and a goaltender stopping .888 behind him.
Fifty-point-seven per cent of the expected goals, 60th percentile, from a 24-year-old third-pair defenceman in his first real season. He had no points in his last ten games and nobody should care. This is a fair NHL player and the plus-minus column is lying about him.
