He can move a puck. Thirteen assists in 41 games is a good rate for a third-pair defenceman and comes from a player who makes the first pass quickly and accurately under a forecheck.
The shot barely exists — 69 attempts, two goals, 80 per cent of them from beyond forty feet with a median of 49. He is not a threat and does not pretend to be.
The Physical Game
Six foot even, 205, and the weak spot. Fourteen penalty minutes in 41 games. He defends with his stick and his angles, and against a heavy cycle he gets pushed off the puck.
The Intangibles
A twenty-ninth overall pick who has played 448 games without ever locking down a top-four role, which is its own kind of career.
The on-ice rate was 49.5 per cent of the expected goals, 48th percentile — dead average, and on this blue line that made him the second-best defenceman by process. Nine points in his last ten games.
He is 27 and available. The passing is real, the defending is ordinary, and a club that shelters him gets a useful third pair out of it.
