Ask the book

2026-27 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2026-27 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2026-27 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

35 games, a .874 save percentage and a 3.05 goals-against average, with no shutouts. Against a career .913 across 552 games, that is not a slump — that is a number that demands an explanation, and the 2 available ones are age and health.

The Physical Game

6-4 and heavy, and his whole method is to let the size do the work. He plays a calm, upright, deeply positional game: he is square to the puck early, he does not over-commit, and he takes away the top of the net simply by standing in the right place. At his best he makes hard shots look routine and routine shots look boring.

He is not an athletic scrambler and never has been. When the play breaks down and he has to make a second and third save on the same shift, he is beatable — the push across is average and always was.

Rebound control has historically been good and was not last season, which is often the first thing to go when a goaltender is either hurt or a half-step late.

The Mental Game

Unflappable, to the point that it reads as indifference. Bad goals do not visibly affect him and neither do good runs. Over a long career that temperament has been worth as much as the technique.

The Intangibles

Availability is the entire question. He has been genuinely excellent when he plays and he has repeatedly not played — long absences have shaped the back half of his career, and no team has been able to plan a season around him for some time.

Edmonton has spent years trying to solve its goaltending and has arrived at a room with 3 goalies and no certainty. He is the most accomplished of them by a distance, and the least predictable to count on.

Ordinary depth, and he does not need more than that. Looking down at the crease, net at the top — he sets up about average.

The size does the work a more aggressive position would do for someone else. He is square and still, and the top of the net simply is not there.

A big goaltender who erases the first shot and struggles with the third. Higher number, more dangerous. Seen from the shooter’s side, so the glove is on the right.

high middle — Size alone takes this away. Almost nothing goes over him from a clean look.

low glove — Down early and heavy; low shots through a screen are where last season went wrong.

low blocker — The push across is average and always was. Second and third saves on the same shift are the weakness.
