He outplayed Vejmelka on a smaller sample behind the same defence — eight points of save percentage on 960 shots, which is suggestive rather than conclusive but points the same way twice, since his career number is .905 against Vejmelka’s .899.
It was his first extended run of NHL games at twenty-five.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 218, which is ordinary size now, and he plays a compact, positional game rather than an athletic one — square early, and he does not throw himself at pucks he can meet standing up.
He tracks the puck well through traffic, which behind this defence corps is the skill that gets used most: a great many of the shots he sees arrive through bodies with no warning. The puck-handling is the weakest part and he does not start breakouts.
The Mental Game
He stepped away from hockey in 2021 and entered the NHL and NHLPA player assistance programme, and he has since spoken publicly about obsessive-compulsive disorder. He has been open in a way the sport has not historically made easy.
That is the most important thing in his file and it belongs here rather than in a footnote: a goaltender who was out of the game entirely two years ago played 27 NHL games last season and was the better of the club’s two. Whatever the save percentage does this year, the compete has already been demonstrated in a harder arena than this one.
The Intangibles
Eighty-eighth overall in 2016 to Tampa Bay, then to Nashville, then to Arizona — a third-round pick two organisations let go.
