New Jersey Devils Center #12

Nineteen goals and seven assists, which is a very strange season.

Last Season

Nineteen goals and seven assists in 70 games — 26 points, plus-three, at 13:37 a night.

The Finesse Game

The split is remarkable. Nineteen goals from a hundred and four shots on goal is an 18 per cent conversion; seven assists in 70 games is close to nothing.

The location supports the goals: 144 unblocked attempts, 44 per cent from inside twenty feet, median 22. He is getting to the paint and finishing there.

But he was drafted sixth overall as a playmaking centre, and a season with nineteen goals and seven assists is the opposite of the player that pick assumed.

The Physical Game

Six foot three, 201, and he uses the frame at the net without being a punishing forechecker. Thirty-nine penalty minutes.

The Intangibles

Forty-seven point four per cent of the expected goals, 30th percentile — the weakest of the club’s regular forwards — with the chances 32.8 to 36.4 against across 878 minutes.

So: the best finishing rate on a team that could not finish, sitting on the worst on-ice rate among its forwards. Both of those will move toward the middle.

Four goals in his last ten. He is 27, the sixth pick in 2017, on his third organisation, and this is the first season he has been genuinely useful. Whether it is repeatable is a real question.
