The Finesse Game
The skating is exceptional and always has been — it is why he was in the conversation for the top five picks before he slid to thirtieth. He is fast in every direction, changes pace mid-stride, and can beat NHL defencemen wide on pure speed, which very few twenty-two-year-olds can.
The rest is unfinished. The decisions come too slowly at this level, he loses pucks trying to make one more move, and twenty-seven shots in twenty-five games is a modest rate for a player with his tools.
The Physical Game
Six-one and 173, which is light, and it shows in every board battle. He is not physically ready for a regular NHL role and that is the most straightforward thing standing in his way.
The Intangibles
He slid in his draft year on questions about consistency and application rather than talent, and those questions have not yet been settled either way.
At twenty-two, with a tool this rare, he will get more chances than most. The sample is thirty-one games and nothing about it should be read as conclusive in either direction.
