This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
30 games, 15-12-0, an .8902 and a 3.21, 765 shots faced and 2 shutouts.
Ottawa’s crease came in 26.6 goals worse than the chances it faced, thirtieth in the league, and both goaltenders who played more than twenty-five games finished under .900. Ottawa was one of only three clubs in this edition where that was true.
The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 200 and plays higher in his crease than his size requires.
Two shutouts in 30 games and five in a 160-game career. He is a positional goaltender who challenges from the top of the paint and relies on being square rather than on recovering across, so when he is beaten it is usually laterally and on the second shot. Pucks come off him into the slot more often than they should and the rebound control has never been the reliable part.
The Mental Game
A career .9049 across 160 games and a .8902 in this one.
He went 22-17-4 with a .917 in 46 games two seasons before this and 11-11-2 with a .9021 the year after, which is the range. Fifteen wins in thirty games behind the thirtieth-ranked defensive goaltending in the league is not a collapse; it is a backup being asked to be a starter.
The Intangibles
188th overall in 2011 by Columbus, nine seasons, four organisations and 160 games at 31.
A seventh-round pick who has spent nine seasons as the second goaltender in Columbus, Chicago, Carolina and Ottawa. Linus Ullmark’s arrival puts him back where the career has always been, which is the more likely place for him to be good.
